The Šiauliai Jewish Community warmly invites you to the musical “The Contemporary Story of Esther” (“La Meguila d'Itzik”), which will take place on March 3 at 6:00 PM at the Šiauliai Culture Center’s gallery “Laiptai.”

The performance will feature students of Prof. Sabina Martinaitytė and Prof. Audronė Eitmanavičiūtė from the Vytautas Magnus University Music Academy – laureates of international competitions.

The musical is based on the work of the renowned Jewish poet Itsik Manger (1901–1969), with music composed by Dov Seltzer. It is a colorful and lively Purim play (Purim shpiel), inspired by the story of the Book of Esther, traditionally read in synagogues during the Purim celebration.

The audience will see the biblical story of Queen Esther, who saved the Jewish people from destruction. However, the narrative is presented creatively and in a contemporary way – infused with the atmosphere of early 20th-century Eastern European Jewish life, humor, and unexpected characters. The performance brings to life Mordechai, Esther, King Ahasuerus, and Haman, as well as additional comic characters that give the show its distinctive charm.
